Here at Quick Family Farm, we like nice chickens. We don't demand all our chickens are as friendly as this attention, begging pullet. However, we do not tolerate any mean birds at the farm. If a bird can't play nicely with people or other birds, they go into the pot.
HEALTH After raising chickens for twenty years, we've learned that not all breeds or bloodlines were created equals in health. While we do treat and check for internal and external parasites, we consider all other medications to be inexcusable. A bird will see our axe, before it gets a dose of Tylan.
The hen in this photo has been in our breeding program since 2013. This photo was taken as she was finishing her molt in 2016. This hen never seems to lose weight during her molt, and unlike many hens... she always molts back into the gorgeous mahogany feathering that she had as a pullet. Because of this, and her health and production, we consider her to be a valued asset to our breeding program.
PRODUCTION At Quick Family Farm, we like to eat chicken. Breaded, slow cooked, grilled, bbqed, we eat chicken multiple times a week. And we can happily say, that we rarely purchase chicken at the grocery store!! We also like eggs and baked goods. And nothing makes a better Angel Food Cake like fresh eggs!
Though, we don't have unrealistic expectations of our fowl (these aren't Golden Comets and Cornish Rocks here) we do weigh all our breeding stock, feel their bodies to see how they are fleshed, assess meat quality, and consider lazy hens to be ready for the crock pot.
STANDARD OF PERFECTION Yes, we do own the Standard of Perfection. This book is the outline on how to bred proper type and color on your fowl. Every time we pick our breeders, we look back to our Standard.
